In the mundane world of corporate America, Peter Gibbons is stuck in a rut. A software engineer at Initech, Peter's daily routine consists of drudgery and frustration as he navigates the soul-sucking office environment. His life takes an unexpected turn when he seeks hypnotherapy to alleviate his stress and anxiety. Under the guidance of Dr. Swanson, Peter undergoes a series of hypnotic sessions that unlock a newfound sense of confidence and recklessness within him. As he becomes increasingly bold, Peter begins to defy the authority of his boss, Bill Lumbergh, and indulge in the small pleasures of life, from savoring a perfect cup of coffee to engaging in illicit office shenanigans. However, this new lease on life comes with its own set of consequences. Peter's carefree attitude inspires his co-workers, Michael and Samir, to follow suit, leading to a series of misadventures that threaten to upend the entire office. Meanwhile, Peter's romantic interest, Joanna, is caught in the crossfire as he becomes increasingly detached from reality. As Peter's antics escalate, he finds himself at odds with his former self, struggling to reconcile his newfound sense of freedom with the harsh realities of adulthood.
